Precinct splitting

The features (precincts or block groups) that make up every map in Redistricter are themselves made up of census blocks, which are the smallest universal geographic unit in the United States.

When mapping districts, you may find it necessary to include only a portion of a precinct or block group in a specific district. This can be achieved by splitting the feature. To perform a split, right-click on the desired feature and select Split Precinct.

Once your feature is split you can right click on it again for more options:

  • Unsplit precinct: Reverts all the census blocks to their original feature.
  • Erase blocks: Unassigns all the blocks from that feature from all districts.
  • Merge blocks: Combines all blocks within that feature according to the district they are assigned to.

You can also unsplit all split features in a map by selecting the Unsplit all precincts option from the “Advanced” dropdown in the map header.
